A complex Kenyan coffee from the Kangocho Cooperative brimming with citrus and spiced fruit in a lively, medium-bodied cup.
—
Kangocho sits in the cool, red soils of Nyeri County in central Kenya. Smallholder farmers deliver ripe coffee cherries to the cooperative-run washing station. This station is part of the Gikanda Farmers’ Cooperative Society and benefits from its elevation, about 1,630 meters, with surrounding farms even higher on Mt. Kenya’s foothills - conditions that help concentrate acidity and sweetness in the bean.
This lot is comprised of SL-28 and SL-34 which are classic Kenyan cultivars known for their quality and the delicious coffee they result in. Careful sorting, fermentation, washing, and raised-bed drying keep the profile exceptionally clean and clear, letting the region’s structure and fruit character take center stage.
On the nose, you can find caramel, dried mango, and a light earthiness. The first sip brings bright orange and lime peel, then dried mango reappears with hints of clove and anise. The cup is medium-bodied with a juicy quality, and the lively acidity is balanced by mild sweetness. It finishes long with the flavors lingering as they slowly fade.
This coffee was roasted with the intent of preserving its exciting Kenyan character while developing just enough sweetness to balance the bright acidity inherent in these beans. Kenya Nyeri Kangocho AB is the type of coffee that rewards you with layers of alluring flavors on each sip.
(Fun fact: The name “Kangocho” comes from the local Kikuyu language and roughly translates to “place of many corners.” It is inspired by the winding paths on the hillside where the factory is located. Those twisting trails connecting the farms have earned the hill the nickname “the hill of corners.”)
